The Length of your Curly Hair

By Cynthia Ramona

Choosing a length for your hair can be found troublesome. It isn't always easy getting it just right. It varies from person to person. One length that is great on one person might be horrible on another. No matter who you are, you want to have the best length that looks great on you.

Curly short hair can be either easy or hard to maintain. With really short hair, your hair is always very healthy because it is only the newest hair and the dead ends are frequently cut off. Healthy hair looks better and behaves better giving you more beautiful curls.

Also, short hair tends to curl better. There is less hair there to weight it down. This can be a problem to get it just right though because you don't want it to end up looking like an afro.

If you want really short curly hair, work carefully with your hairdresser. Find a cut that looks right curly and that you can easily maintain. If you cut it really short, be aware that if you decide to grow it long again, it might look funny for a little while when it's in the in between stages.

Medium or shoulder length hair is great for curls. It almost always works. It's long enough to keep from getting an afro, as long as it's not too curly, but short enough it won't pull out the curls or get in the way. Experiment with different layers and lengths to get the look you want.

Long curly hair can be very beautiful, but it is also much harder to get where you want it and maintain it. As your hair gets longer, the ends get older and older. You should stay away from heat and dye as much as possible and get a balance between growing it out and trimming off the dead ends.

Curly hair needs a lot of moisture. Steer clear from blow dryers and ironing no matter what the length, but especially long hair. Trim it often if you are growing it long to remove damage. It will take a little longer to grow out, but it will look healthy.

Also, with long curls, the weight of your hair can weight it down, pulling out the curls. Or, if your hair is really frizzy and curly, you could have a huge poof for hair. If you want more tamed curls and your hair works this way, then by all means, grow it long. If you get a poof, your hair probably doesn't get the right moisture and needs some extra care. Use a good conditioner and add an antifrizz serum. - 15255
