As I was doing a search on the internet I came across a bio of a true American hero, General Maxwell W. Steel, Jr. Retired since 1975, he was served our country in some truly amazing ways, primarily as a brilliant doctor. As you read his story you will be impressed with someone who chose to use his career as a doctor to also serve his country via military service. This is how it all began.

His military career begins in 1944. General Steel joined the Medical Officer Training Corps. while working on his MD. When he finished his medical degree, he then received a Reserve Commission as First Lieutenant. The full-time, active military service that I spoke of began in November of that year. He was assigned to an Orthopedic Doctor at the Oliver General Hospital, located in Augusta, GA. Three months later, as the military often does, General Steel was re-assigned to Neurosurgical Service in Walla-Walla, Washington (at McCaw General).

After World War II, General Steel briefly left the military and continued his medical career as a civilian. Returning to civilian life brought him to Memorial Hospital where he was appointed chief hospital resident. However, that hiatus would only be temporary. He completed his training in internal medicine at Walter Reed and received a regular commission in the Army. However, this residency would end in 1949 when he would be transferred to the Air Force.

In November of 1950 he was assigned as Chief Medical Officer at Chanute Air Force Base. From June of 1951 to December of 1953 he served as consultant in internal medicine to the Far East Air Force's Surgeon. After this tour, he was transferred to California where he served as Chief of medical services and professional services at March Air Force Base.

From August of 1955 to August 1969 he served as Chief of Medical Services and Director of Professional Services at Bolling Air Force Base and Malcolm and Commander of the Malcolm Grow USAF Medical Center (as well as Surgeon of Headquarters Command). In 1970 he became Command Surgeon of Military Airlift Command. Finally, after achieving the distinguished honor of becoming Deputy Surgeon of the Air Force in 1972, he would retire from the military in September of 1975. While General Steel may not be as recognized a name as General George Washington, his contribution to the Service--and to our country--are great. I think before the explosion of crime lab shows, like CSI and Law and Order, it was not very fashionable to be a forensics geek. All it took was the sheer power of Hollywood and Jerry Bruckheimer to make the lowly lab tech into a sexy profession. There was a day being the cop was where the cultural respect went. Then came Quincy and it all started to go to pot. This is not to diminish what real lab technicians and scientists do, but I suppose were a bit programmed to think whats on TV is whats acceptable.

People, come on now! The forensics we see on TV is not really what happens in the lab. What happens with forensics is heavily based, I think, on a process called chromatography. See, that doesnt sound so sexy, does it? Its like most scientific things " they dont sound very appealing unless its David Caruso saying it in a raspy voice. And, I suppose its not really whats said but how its said. He could say the cause of death was blunt trauma from an anvil and wed all nod and creep closer to he screen.

Well, as far as I can tell after a cursory glance around the Internets is that theres a lot of chromatographies. I know thats a misspelled word, but there is gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, affinity chromatography " there are more chromatographies than you shake a stick at. What the process allows for, essentially, is the precise separation of complex chemical mixtures using a color-coded matrix. Eh? How about them apples?

In essence, the process corresponds a color with a specific chemical compound. Say, for this example, that the chemicals in lipstick turn the chromatographic paper blue. You take a swab of the poor victim from Central Casting and lo and behold, David Caruso gets to say something like this: The evidence is consistent with the presence of cosmetic ingredients. Presto: Hollywood magic.

And so the circus never ends and we all, despite our better judgment, go on believing that lab techs are hip and cool and that David Caruso is a good actor. Ok, ok, I know, that was a cheap shot. Its about working smart not hard. You make the choice how many minutes a day you want to train. The minimal time is only three minutes. How long you exercise every day is up to you. You can train for as little as three minutes a day. For quick permanent results, I recommend taking the program that requires ten minutes a day commitment.

Different people get different results in different time periods. It is suggested that you prepare to train for two months. Your snoring will like stop long before the end of two months but If you determine to go full speed ahead for two months then you can be assured you will be cured by the end of the program. It may take the full two months to work a permanent cure for snoring even though it is very likely that you will be sleeping quietly all night long long before the two month program is completed.

The Value of Omega Fatty Acids

I grew up in Iceland where we would drink the pure fat from fish liver. It's called lysi and it was awful. Today you can get it in pill form.

I can't say as I understood just how what we ingest benefits our bodies. But once I grew up, I decided to find out. I was especially curious about the lysi.

Our bodies require certain vitamins and nutrients. Our bodies are not capable of creating many of them so we have to ingest them. Omega Fatty Acids is one of these essential polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The best place to get this is in fish such as salmon, tuna or sardines. But, because of the mercury content and other toxins, this needs to be in limited quantities. Two servings per week at most.

Sunflower seeds, soybeans, olive oil and avacados also contain omega fatty acids. There are a number of foods that have the fatty acids added to them in manufacturing such as some cereals, orange juice and baby food.

Getting omega fatty acids through food is considered the best way to get it. You may however want to consult with your doctor or nutritionist to verify just how much you need.

If your diet isn't providing you with a sufficient amount of fatty acids, supplements can be taken. You will want to research the brand of course as they are not regulated.

Why do we want to do this anyway? Studies have proven that babies require this for proper development.

Who Makes The Rules?

It is a growing trend to start our children in organized sports at a very young age. Mom, dad, I am sure you proudly recall watching your first born playing soccer at the age of 5. The rules are simple. Everyone plays and nobody loses. Funny how the game always seems to end in a tie. Your little guy chases the ball mixed into a cluster with the other children. Your child's team works hard to achieve championship status. As a family, you commit to raise the money to make your child's "World Series" deam a reality. You sell hotdogs, wash cars, and seek sponsors. Your friends , family and community rally around you, contributing to the cause. You have raised the funds...the team will have their opportunity to play.

As you arrive to your "World Series" you are immediately struck by the athletic ability of the opposing teams. It is then that you find out that this tournment allows teams to pick up "stud" players. To stay competitive with the other teams your coach feels he must do the same. The result... Your child and many of his teammates sit on the bench.

What message do we send to our children? "Thanks for all your hardwork this season, but have a seat. You're not good enough to play these kids". Isn't it your child and his teammates played hard to make it to this level? I say come as a team, play as a team, leave as a team! - 15255
