By TomO\'Riordan

Tahitian Noni Juice is becoming very popular. And for good reason. The Noni, or as its sometimes called, Morinda is an evergreen plant that grows primarily in Tahiti, but is also found in other pacific islands, along with parts of Asia and South America.

The fruit of the Noni has been embraced among the Polynesians for many centuries. The Noni is also referred to as the Indian Mulberry, or Morinda depending upon the culture. In some areas the Noni fruit is consumed whole, while in others it is more common to be seen as a Juice. It also makes a delicious ice cream topping!

Noni grows primarily in the forests. It takes roughly 18 months for a plant to reach it's full maturity, where it will can be as high as 9m. The leaves have a darker green color and shiny coating. A typical plant will yield between 4-8 kg of fruit every month, throughout the entire year for the duration of the plant's mature life. The unripe fruit is a dark green in color and becomes yellow and lightens as it ripens.

The noni fruit is an excellent form of carbohydrates and dietary fiber; it is also a good source of vitamin C and niacin. It does contain higher levels of potassium; this may need to be considered in people that need to watch their potassium intake.

What is it about this plant, and its juice, that is causing all the fuss? Well the biggest claims are that noni juice could cure, treat or even prevent disease. Some claim says that the Tahitian Noni juice has been shown to maintain existing healthy levels of cholesterol.

There are currently numerous studies being undertaken to verify these claims. And other studies hoping to explore the many varied benefits of the fruit. Early animal tests have proven to be very positive. Testing is now moving on to humans. Even early tests in humans, in addition to mountains of anecdotal evidence have been very encouraging. The many benefits of the ancient Noni will take generations to unravel.

One of the preliminary studies has shown that drinking 3-4 ounces of Tahitian Noni Juice daily will aid in maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol. With the concern among many individuals, and doctors for cardiovascular health these studies have been very exciting. Many people have made Noni juice a regular part of their diet based on these early studies.
